Oh my, what a unique, fun, witty read!
The comical blurb was what drew me into this book. Landish has tapped into an unexplored area with this one, it’s part rom-com, murder-mystery, and dark-comedy rolled into one. Her spin on the romantic tale was so refreshing. The Coroner and the Life Insurance agent, I loved it. Landish does an excellent job turning two not-so-glamours careers (in my opinion, no offense to the Corners and Life Insurance agents) into an offbeat, quirky comedy with very relatable characters.
Zoey Walker, Coroner, Williamson County, and Blake Hale, life insurance agent, collided on the highway when she T-bones his car. Blake is a sweet nerdy guy who is exceptionally handsome and willing to work to get Zoey’s attention. It was so refreshingly different — I know I said that already — but it is worth repeating!
The story follows Zoey, a woman who the town considers to be a bit weird and also jinx not only because she deals with death as the Coroner but seems to bring an end to those around her. The worst is that Zoey believes this herself and has sworn off dating. So when she literally runs into Blake and doesn’t kill him, she decides to stay away. As an insurance agent who is excellent with numbers, Blake has already calculated the risks and is determined to get a date with the mysterious beauty. When their careers bring them together on a case of sorts, these two have no choice but to get closer.
The tone of the book was different and enjoyable. It kept my attention to the end. Landish knows how to build up the slow burn, and the growth of the characters in intimacy gives this lighthearted book depth.
I’m a coroner, and yes, it’s the kiss of death on my dating life. When men find out what I do, I’m lucky to hear “it was nice meeting you.”
Until I almost accidentally kill Blake Hale with my car.
Instead of being freaked out by me, he’s intrigued.
No matter how much I try to scare him off, he keeps coming back for more.
And for a follow-the-rules guy, he’s breaking them all for me.
We couldn’t be more different.
He’s all goodness and light, with a brain that’s even sexier than his six-pack.
I’m danger in a pretty package, and no amount of knocking on wood is going to make the happily ever after he’s promising come true. But…
With each word we exchange, my resolve weakens.
With each heated look, he gets further into my soul.
With every kiss, he consumes me by accepting me just as I am.
I deal in death all day. He sells life… insurance. What could possibly go wrong when I start believing in Mr. Right?
Drop Dead Gorgeous is a full-length meet-cute Romance… with a twist! It is a standalone.
